How to Hide Money When You Travel

Keeping Important Documents and Funds Close

Maybe I'm a little over-precautionery, but when I am in larger cities or traveling, I am not content keeping my identification, atm/debit/credit cards, or cash in my purse. Not at all. I like to hide them... where they are accessible to me in inconspicuous places. I "wear" them.

Although there are many forms of hiding money on your person, my favorite place is in my bra. [Ok, gents, I know that doesn't necessarily help you, but in application, you could translate this idea to your undergarment.]

A money concealing option for men & women

You mean, like taking saloon tips?

No, I do not simply stuff it in my cleavage like a saloon gal, that could slip too easily. I select padded bras with removable "cup enhancements", you know, the "miracle bra"? However, my concern is for monetary safety rather than bustline enhancement. I remove the "enhancement" pads and place money, even plasticware and id, into the pocket.

I use a bra with a double enclosure seam that I have to actually open to access contents, rather than a bra offering only a single slit void of a fold-over. And ladies, balance is key here. Do not stuff twenty bills on one side, and none in the other...

When I need to access my hidden stash, I simply go to a restroom, remove the desired item(s) and place in a zippered interior jacket pocket or other secure place. This has worked well shopping and touring. For swimwear, simply place items in a double-zipped snack size plastic storage bag prior to "stuffing your bra".

This is so simple, and does not require any sewing -- which I love... not having to sew, I mean. As a mother of five and a business owner, I have a lot of demands on my schedule, and sewing seldom acquires any time alotment from me. Another thing I don't like to forfeit my time to is recovery of lost or stolen items (which is a good reason to have travel insurance), and stuffing my bra is an effective preventative measure! Happy stuffing, travelistas!

Tips from Readers

Some of this blog's readers have shared their secrets to hiding money safely when traveling.

Anna L., a guest commentator, writes, "

I use clothes with built in pockets. I either wear underwear with pockets or a tank top with a pocket on the stomach. My husband wears a t-shirt with a pocket. I wear the tank under a regular shirt so no one sees the pocket and no way anyone can steal from me. They are so much better than money belts or neck bags. I buy them from the Clever travel companion.

I wore these products on my last trip driving through mexico and it really made it easier to relax knowing my stuff was hidden."

Hi, what a great idea! i always use a 'bum' bag as we call it over here, you put it around your waist and have a zipper on the actual purse, then you put your clothes over the top, but I may just starting using your idea! cheers nell

I too hide money, on my person, from my hubby,

who is often shocked at how much we have......

from myself,

I am a firm believer of 'not putting all of your

eggs in one basket".

I have a high instep........it is not my

bra....but my shoe.....that hides my available

spending money.....along with my bible, the floor

mats, taped to the dog's collar, underneath

the propane tank, in the flour canister......

oops........have I told the thieves too much!?

interesting ideas! the bra one's not bad,but mine's better! i fold the notes in half then put them in a plastic bank bag,(used for coins) then carefully put it down the front of my panties,(or bikini pants)depending on where i am. it's totally concealed! no worries! just make sure you wear loose fitting outer clothing so nothing shows through! this idea works a treat! trust me!! even my friends could'nt tell until i showed them! now they all agree and there doing the same (girls! that is). is this brilliant or what!!!!! good luck! from Keeley.

This is a great Hub for travelers! I am in the process of writing a Hub about traveling solo in Puerto Rico. May I link this Hub to mine when I finish it? I use a money belt, and also place cash and credit cards in my jeans pocket. Thanks so much.

hi again! love this site,it's great been able to share idea's with fellow travellers on out foxing pickpockets. i was in spain two weeks ago when my purse was stolen from my bag while sitting outside a cafe, sly old me had the last laugh though, there was only a few pounds and some change in it,the bulk of my money(notes)was in a plastic bank bag which i'd put down the front of my bikini pants before leaving the hotel!(phew!)i'd chose to wear a loose fitting skirt so it was well hidden!! just goes to show no precaution is too much trouble if it gives you peace of mind! i now always make sure that i hide the bulk of my money this way wether i'm wearing a skirt, shorts,a wrap around skirt thing or even jeasn's! better safe than sorry i say!! Nice holiday too! Any of you girls out there tried this! if not i really recomend you do!! it's certainly unbeatable!! Guaranteed! (HA HA!) See Ya! and good luck! Keeley. X

When I was traveling a lot on business I was always concerned when separated from my purse during the screening process at the airport. Yours is a simple way to protect cash from being misplaced. I had to laugh at your recommendation to stuff both sides equally. LOL Great read.
